TOUR OVERVIEW

The Shkhara Glacier hike is one of the most impressive day trips in Upper Svaneti. The route starts from Ushguli, one of the highest inhabited settlements in Europe, and follows the valley toward Mount Shkhara, Georgia’s highest peak. It is a strong choice for travelers who want a full mountain day with big scenery, open landscapes, medieval towers, glacier views, and the atmosphere of remote Svaneti.

The tour includes transport from Mestia to Ushguli and back. After arriving in Ushguli, the hiking route starts directly from the village and continues through the wide Enguri Valley toward the glacier. The landscape is open and dramatic: stone towers behind you, grazing horses, mountain slopes on both sides, and the white wall of Shkhara ahead. Unlike forested hikes around Mestia, this route feels spacious and exposed, with long views almost the entire way.

The hike is not technical, but it is a proper mountain walk. The distance is longer than some short day hikes, and the trail includes uneven ground, river valley terrain, and weather exposure. For travelers who prefer an easier option, horse riding from Ushguli can be arranged upon request, depending on local availability and weather conditions.

TOUR BY DAY

Start from Mestia

The tour begins in Mestia in the morning. Your driver and guide meet you at your accommodation or an agreed meeting point. After a short briefing, you start the drive toward Ushguli.

Drive from Mestia to Ushguli

The transfer to Ushguli follows one of the most scenic mountain roads in Svaneti. The route passes through traditional villages, river valleys, mountain slopes, and views of medieval Svan towers. Road conditions can vary, so the drive is part of the adventure and is usually done with a suitable local vehicle.

Arrival in Ushguli

After arriving in Ushguli, there is time for a short orientation before the hike begins. Ushguli itself is one of the most atmospheric places in Svaneti, with ancient towers, stone houses, and views toward Mount Shkhara.

Hike from Ushguli toward Shkhara Glacier

The hike starts from Ushguli and follows the valley in the direction of Shkhara Glacier. The trail runs through open alpine scenery, with the Enguri River nearby and wide views of the surrounding mountains. As you move farther from the village, the landscape becomes quieter and more remote.

Glacier viewpoint

The route continues toward the glacier viewpoint, where the scale of Mount Shkhara and the surrounding ice and rock becomes more visible. Your guide will choose a safe stopping point depending on the weather, trail condition, and group pace. There will be time to rest, take photos, and enjoy the scenery before returning.

Optional horse riding

Horse riding from Ushguli toward the glacier area can be arranged upon request. This option is useful for travelers who prefer not to walk the full distance or want a different experience in the valley. Availability depends on local horse owners, season, and weather conditions, so it should be requested in advance.

Return hike to Ushguli

After visiting the glacier area, you return along the same valley route back to Ushguli. The return walk offers excellent views of the village and its towers from the opposite direction.

Drive back to Mestia

From Ushguli, you return by vehicle to Mestia. Arrival time depends on the hiking pace, road conditions, and time spent in Ushguli.
